The evening light shone on the water, reflecting into the odd, silver-grey eyes of the man who stood atop the harbour wall, eyes fixed far out to sea. He never moved, not even to acknowledge the occasional shouts of greeting, until the white sails of a ship came into view on the horizon. Then his hands checked his belt pouch, fluttering over it with a nervousness a watcher would not have expected of such a man. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with the classic physique of a fighter used to wearing heavy armour. Though only in his thirty-second year, his hair was a dark grey. Straightening his cloak and checking the longsword strapped to his side,he jumped lightly down from the wall and stumbled. Laughing quietly at his clumsiness, he walked to the start of the pier, keeping well back as the ship slid into berth, fidgeting impatiently as he watched the unloading of the cargo. Finally, a slender figure wearing a simple deep blue gown and warm brown cloak appeared at the rail. A sudden breeze caught her raven hair and swirled it behind her like a flag. Grey's heart swelled. Gods, how he had missed her! With light footsteps, she hurried down the gangplank and into his arms. "Telran..." Grey sighed her name, relieved that she was here, safe, after so long away. Although he had planned to wait a while until they were safely home and warm, his impatience got the better of him and he drew back, fumbling in his belt pouch, ignoring the quizzical look on her face. "Welcome home, my love," he smiled, his fingers closing around the object he sought. "I am glad to see you unharmed. I missed you... I had far too much time alone, to think and to wonder..." He stopped, drew a breath and fixed her sapphire eyes with his, catching her left hand and holding it tightly. "My lady... Telran... will you become my betrothed?" He opened his free hand to reveal a silver and sapphire ring, the same deep blue as her eyes. |

Telran smiled in relief as she saw the coastline appear on the horizon, and the port of Red Barrel. Home at last. She had been too long away, yet she had had little choice. How she wished Grey could have come with her, but it would not have been advisable. Politics... she sighed. It took an age for the ship to slide into port, and she had long since seen the familiar cloaked figure waiting on the harbour wall. A blush rose in her cheeks, and she marvelled at it, amazed she could still feel so shy at knowing that Grey wanted to wait for her, wanted her. At last, they were docked, the cargo unloaded and the gangplank lowered. Telran hurried forward, almost running to where Grey stood, into the familiar circle of his arms. After a long moment, she was puzzled when he drew back and began fiddling with his belt pouch. "Welcome home, my love. I am glad to see you unharmed. I missed you... I had far too much time alone, to think and to wonder..." He stopped, drew a breath and fixed her sapphire eyes with his, catching her left hand and holding it tightly. "My lady... Telran... will you become my betrothed?" His question stopped the breath in her lungs, the ring in his palm glinting in the twilight. She had to stop herself looking around for an attack, sure that this moment could not be happening. She had never known happiness without a cost, yet here was Grey and safety and the haven she had sought for so long. Tears brimmed in her eyes and her smile shone like the stars. "Grey... of course!" She watched, still a little stunned as he slipped the ring onto her finger, and laughed as he caught he into a tight embrace, his lips meeting hers. They broke apart, breathless, joy on both their faces. Telran caught his hand and pulled him towards the town. "This calls for a drink or two! Come, to the Inn - I want to tell the world!" Laughing, unable to stop smiling, they hurried through the streets and into the Red Barrel Inn, the silver and sapphire ring gleaming on Telran's pale hand. |
